Should I Choose Daily or Monthly Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses are a great vision correction alternative for people who are tired of wearing their glasses every day, or may just want a way to change up their look from time to time.

Two of the most popular options in contact lenses today are daily-disposable and monthly-disposable contact lenses. There are both advantages and disadvantages to both of these types of lenses. So how do you know which is best for you? Let’s compare.

Monthly Vs. Daily Contact Lenses

As their name suggests, monthly contacts are worn for up to a month at a time before you replace the lens with a new one, while dailies are worn for a full day and then disposed of. The next day, you choose a new lens from the packet, pop it in and carry on as usual.

Monthly Contact Lenses

If you plan on wearing your contacts every day, monthlies tend to be noticeably less expensive over time than dailies of similar quality, even when considering the cost of the cleaning solution, storage case, etc.

This is because monthlies need to be replaced only once a month, as opposed to every day. You buy 12 pairs of monthly contact lenses, as opposed to 365 daily pairs.

On the other hand, monthly lenses require you to carefully clean and store your lenses every day. Improper cleaning and storage of your monthly contact lenses can cause a build-up of bacteria and proteins that can make lens wear less comfortable and lead to an eye infection.

Daily Contact Lenses

Daily contact lenses are a great choice for people who don’t want to worry about cleaning and storing their contact lenses, and simply want to have a clean, fresh pair of contacts at the beginning of each day. This is also a great option for kids and teens, who may not always be the most reliable when it comes to properly caring for their lenses.

However, because you’re replacing your lenses every single day, daily lenses are both more expensive and worse for the environment.

Can I wear contact lenses beyond their recommended wearing time?

No. Monthly contact lenses should be worn no longer than 30 days, and daily contacts should be thrown out at the end of each day. Failure to follow the recommended schedule can result in painful scratches on the eye and infections that can cause serious loss of vision and even blindness.

Are contact lenses covered by insurance?

In most cases, contact lenses are at least partially covered by your vision insurance plan. Different plans will have different options for coverage, so be sure to speak to your provider to clarify. Our eye care team can also help you figure out what your insurance benefits are.
