For Dr. Jennifer Perez, a good eye exam begins with understanding the person behind the prescription. She listens closely, explains as much as you want to know, and adjusts her approach to what helps you feel comfortable.
Her connection to optometry began with her own experience as a child. After struggling in school, Dr. Perez was initially thought to have a learning disability. Eventually, an eye exam provided the answer. Dr. Perez wasn’t having trouble learning. She was having trouble seeing.
The optometrist who helped her made a lasting impression and inspired the career she would later pursue. Today, Dr. Perez brings that same patience and individual attention to her own patients, with a particular interest in caring for older adults and helping people with low vision continue doing the things that matter to them.
Education Built Around Better Patient Care
Dr. Perez earned her bachelor’s degree in Pre-Medical Biology with a minor in Microbiology from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She went on to earn her Doctor of Optometry from Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry in Tahlequah.
Following optometry school, she completed a Primary Care Residency with an emphasis in Ocular Disease at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks in Fayetteville, Arkansas. During her residency, she developed an especially strong appreciation for working with older adults and the perspective, humor, and wisdom they brought into the exam room.
That experience strengthened a philosophy Dr. Perez carries into every visit: no two patients need exactly the same kind of care.
Thoughtful Care, Shaped Around You
Dr. Perez knows this from her own family. Her father wants every detail. Her mother loves a conversation. Her shy sister appreciates reassurance. That same awareness follows Dr. Perez into the exam room: there is no single right way to care for every patient.
That philosophy is especially meaningful in her work with older adults and patients with low vision. During optometry school, Dr. Perez met a patient named Virginia who was experiencing vision loss and wanted one thing above all: to keep sewing. Together, they spent extra time refining her glasses and trying magnification options that could help her continue creating.
A month later, Virginia returned with a handmade purple purse covered in tiny eyeballs, made especially for Dr. Perez. She still keeps the little purple purse, eyeballs and all. It reminds her why patience matters and why the details of a patient’s life belong in the conversation about their vision.
At Premier Eye Associates, Dr. Perez looks forward to providing low-vision care while continuing to grow across the practice’s broad range of eye care services.
Crafts, Community, and a New Home in South Jersey
Originally born in Midland, Texas, and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma, Dr. Perez moved to New Jersey in July 2026. She now lives in Medford with her partner, Matt, and has quickly come to appreciate the welcoming, close-knit community she has found in South Jersey.
Give Dr. Perez something she can make, paint, decorate, or hunt down in an antique shop, and she’s happy. She enjoys crafting, drawing, painting, reading, and interior design, with a particular fondness for antique and thrift shopping. Her creative streak even earned her the unofficial distinction of being voted “Most Likely to Make Crafts for My Patients.”
Community involvement has also been important to Dr. Perez. While living in Oklahoma, she volunteered with the Special Olympics, elementary school vision screenings, and diabetic health screenings. Now, she is looking forward to putting down roots and becoming part of the South Jersey community she calls home.
